Criminal Justice Ministry

Mission

It is our belief as Catholic people, we can bring a message of faith, hope, justice, and reconciliation to all affected by the tragedy of crime and violence whether they are the offender, victim, or public servant. The Criminal Justice Ministry Office of the Diocese of San Angelo recruits, screens, and trains volunteers from parishes throughout the diocese.  In order to continue to serve this special propulation we must continue to work directly with our parishes and offer formation and on-going education to help people understand the needs of those we serve. As Catholic people we are called to social ministry. We are called to act with justice, to love tenderly, to serve one another, and to walk humbly with God.

Ministry Efforts

There are four major areas of emphasis in Criminal Justice Ministry (CJM) efforts for the San Angelo Diocese.

1.  To offer worship, prayer, and Catholic teaching at each prision, similar to what is provided in our parishes.
2.  Establish CJM support groups in the major towns to develop outreach efforts for items #3 and 4 below.
3.  Reach out to Ex-Offenders and their Families.
4.  Address Social Justice Issues related to Criminal Justice.

How Can You Help?

Within the 29 counties of our diocese there 55 incarceration facilities with over 8,000 Catholics making our prison population the largest "parish" in the diocese. Needless to say, it takes many dedicated volunteers who are willing to minister to these fellow Catholics through teaching and prayer.

If you think you may be called to this ministry or would like more information about this exciting ministry, please call our Criminal Justice Ministry Coordinator, Deacon Bob Leibrecht at 325-651-7500.
